Teacher’s Day celebrated all over India on 5th September every year, not only commemorate the birth anniversary of late Dr. Radhakrishnan but also highlights the nobility of the profession of teaching and the role of teachers in our society.

5th Sept. celebrated as Teacher’s Day all over India, is a tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who spent nearly 40 years of his life a teacher par excellence. The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Radhakrishnan who was born on 5th Sept. 1888. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan began his career of teaching at the age of 21 as a teacher of philosophy in the Presidency College, Chennai in 1909.

Thereafter, he taught as professor of philosophy in several famed universities in India and abroad such as the University of Chennai, Mysore, Kolkata, Benares, and Oxford in London. The nation recognising his valuable service appointed him as the Chairman of University Grants Commission in the year 1949

Although, he held the helms of the affairs only for a short period of one year, yet he was able to initiate several praiseworthy steps for the promotion of higher learning in India. From 1949 onwards Dr. Radhakrishnan spent his life in the service of nation as ambassador to Russia (1949-52), as Vice-President (1952-62) and as President of India (1962- 67). After a long period of service he passed away on April 17, 1975. ‘

Dr. Radhakrishnan was an outstanding teacher and educationist ever produced by our country. What make him unique in this profession are his quest for knowledge and the love for the profession of teaching.

This day celebrated all over India, also points to the primacy of learning that we all should give in our life. The quest for knowledge like Dr. Radhakrishnan must never be stopped. We need to learn continuously, seeking new frontiers of knowledge.

The day also highlights the role of teachers in our society. Unlike other professions, teachers exert a tremendous influence upon the society. It is in their hands to create or destroy the future of our land.

Like a potter gives shape and life to a lifeless lump of clay, a teacher, too, gives shape to his/her students who are the future of our country and it is no easy task. Therefore, the nation as a whole pays homage and shows respect to the thousands of teachers. Therefore, a day is dedicated in their honour, acknowledging their valuable contributions to the society.
