Short Summary of “Talking Turkeys” by Benjamin Zephaniah

The poem Talking Turkeys has a beautiful message that is being passed on to all humankind regarding animal killing and it has been said in simple conversation mode. In this poem, Zephaniah has excellently conveyed the message that all living beings to feel the pain and agony in the same frequency and we as humans never try to see or understand how it is when it comes to animals and occasions.

In this poem, it is said about Christmas time and how turkeys are considered to be a main course for the season. However, from the turkey’s point of view is what the poet has said all about. Just like us, even they have families (And every turkey has a MUM – Line 4) and they too would like to have fun and enjoy their life and would never wish to be in somebody plate one day. He says; keep them as your friend as they could be your best buddy. There are many turkeys, and they all fear Christmas time as humans destroy their fun and the right to live. They grow these animals in cages and mutate them for better breeds and business (And not to be genetically made for any farmer and his wife – Line 16). The also feel the pain and they also have brains just like us.

The third stanza is beautifully said that a turkey asks Zephaniah, who put the menu ‘turkey’ for Christmas and he has no answer to give and says, humans have become greedy and they do not know how to spend money.

Zephaniah has beautifully said through this poem not to hurt animals and kill them just for our satisfaction. They too have the right to live in this world and not are sacrificed juts for us to feel happy and fill our greed. Be good and show mercy to animals and they could be your Best Friend for a lifetime than any other human could be, is what is being said through this poem.
