The UNICEF was established in 1946 as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to give emergency relief to children in countries affected by the Second World War.

It is now a permanent body called the United Nations Children’s Fund. However, the original abbreviation UNICEF is still used to refer to it. The UNICEF has its headquarters in New York.

Today, the UNICEF seeks to improve the quality of life of children and mothers in less developed countries.
It arranges for training volunteers in the care of mothers and infants, and funds projects for providing clean water, immunisation against diseases, sanitation facilities and education facilities.
The UNICEF also creates awareness against child labour, exploitation of children and discrimination against the girl child.
