What a sorry state of affairs! ADVERTISEMENTS:

Nature’s fury is uncontrollable these days. Earthquakes, tsunami, a new natural calamity unknown to many and sudden floods cause indescribable damage to people. Unless nature lets us live it is difficult to lead our lives peacefully.

In some places there are hurricanes, typhoons of high velocity, which uproot trees, houses of thatch, disrupt the electrical installations and make people homeless. Sometime ago, in New Orleans, in the USA, the hurricane called Katrina, devastated many areas of the city and it was pathetic to see people on the streets suffering without relief measures.

Floods caused by big rivers do extensive damage to the fields. The cultivated fields are suddenly submerged and the crops rot and perish. As a result there is insufficient growth of various crops. People suffer for want of foodstuffs. The water level of the Brahmaputra in the north India rises every year and floods the low-lying areas and many villages. The villagers and even the urban people suffer as floods damage the crops cultivated and wash away their houses. The Brahmaputra River puts people to a severe test.

Sometimes there is very heavy rainfall and low- flying areas are flooded. People living in the low-lying areas have to vacate their houses temporarily and rebuild them later.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

We know of the devastating earthquakes that occurred in Gujarat and Maharashtra some years ago. Thousands of people died in the earthquakes. An earthquake in Pakistan some time ago caused much damage to the houses and the people.

India has been divided into areas which are highly prone to earthquakes, which are moderately prone to earthquakes and which have very little chance of being affected by earthquakes. The Gujarat State is an area most prone to earthquakes. The Tamil Nadu State is moderately prone to earthquakes. Some time ago tremors were felt in Chennai when there was a mild earthquake under the sea near Chennai. It was reported that the walls in some houses in some areas had cracks. Uttaranchal in north India suffered a severe earthquake some years ago. In some countries like Japan volcanoes by spewing out lava unexpectedly cause heavy damage to the areas around. Some islands have active volcanoes and people are afraid to live near the area where there is a volcano. We should be vigilant and save ourselves from the natural calamities.
